Director, Claim Operations


Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) operates 101 hospitals in 18 states, including three academic health centers and major teaching hospitals as well as 29 critical-access facilities, community health-service organizations and nursing colleges.  CHI’s Corporate Enterprise Risk Management Group (ERMG) operates First Initiatives Insurance Ltd (FIIL), its primary risk finance funding mechanism (captive), to support CHI and its sacred mission.  As the healthcare provider landscape changes, ERMG and FIIL will play a key role in achieving CHI’s strategy in the Next Era of Healthy Communities.

CHI now seeks a Director, Claim Operations to provide oversight to assure a high-performing claim operations team.  Reporting to the System VP, Claim Operations and Safety Programs, the Director will lead a staff of eight (8) Claim Professionals in the investigation, evaluation and disposition of approximately 900 reported property and casualty claims per year. S/he will lead the Claim Professionals in management of external experts and legal counsel.  The Director is also responsible for implementing and maintaining CHI’s reserve policy and processes.  The Director has responsibility for staff development/management, budgeting, process improvement and multi-year strategic goal achievement.  Goals for Claim Operations include enhancement of stakeholder relationships, optimization of new processes and standards, on-going development of department communications and renewed focus on improving efficacy.

Top candidates will bring a minimum of 10 years of experience in medical professional and/or commercial general liability claims and complex litigation management.  Additionally, candidates must possess seven (7) years experience in a management/supervisory role.  A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree and/or CPCU, AIC or SCLA designation is preferred. Experience in a medical provider environment is preferred.  Demonstrated success working in a highly matrixed organization of comparable size is strongly preferred.  Candidates must embody and embrace the CHI core values of Reverence, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence.
